The Teatro Real is the first Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC, Asset of Cultural Interest) of the 16,146 registered in the Ministry of Culture, to enter the Registry of the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), which accredits the energy savings of companies and national institutions through the Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs) system.
Teatro Real has achieved final energy savings of 963,159 kWh/year, the equivalent of stopping emitting 263 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere or the annual absorption capacity of 1,575 trees. This is the first singular action registered in the CAEs system at the national level.
The Energy Savings Certificates (CAEs) achieved by the Teatro Real are an instrument that allows the energy savings to be valued, thus recovering part of the cost of the investments made. For this concept, the Teatro Real has received 102,560 euros, which will be used to continue improving environmental sustainability. Specifically, the savings will be invested in replacing the autonomous cooling equipment that serves critical equipment rooms such as stage lighting regulation, which will mean savings of around 50 megawatts per year.
All the work to renew the building's air conditioning has already been carried out, with the replacement of cooling groups and heat pumps or the renewal of the motor pump groups and air treatment units.
The next work, which could be completed by the end of this year, will be the installation of a photovoltaic solar slab on the roof, which will mean the generation of 189 megawatts/hour/year. Accessibility to that area will be improved and it will be a visitable area.
