On March 23, the legendary American company New York City Ballet made debut at Teatro Real, offering five performances at Teatro Real. It is the first time that it could be seen in Madrid since its founding in 1948 by George Balanchine.

Currently directed by Jonathan Stafford, the New York City Ballet has selected three choreographies full of symbolism for the formation: Serenade and Square Dance, created by George Balanchine, and The Times Are Racing, by Justin Peck, resident choreographer of the company and one of the great talents of today. In this way they wanted to pay tribute to their origins and demonstrate the evolution that keeps them in the present as a benchmark of international dance.

Serenade is the first original ballet that George Balanchine created in the United States, and one of the most emblematic works of the NYCB repertoire. Years later, and already integrated into American culture, Balanchine premiered Square Dance in 1957 and the choreographer unites, under this name, the traditions of American folk dance and classical ballet are very different in style but guided by the guidelines of a very definite order. In the program The Times Are Racing, the idealized vision of the dancers disappears, with their perfect bodies and their careful and technical movements executed with apparent simplicity.

The show was recorded in co-production with New York City Ballet, PBS WNET (New York State Public Television), Ezelvier Films, with the collaboration of the Teatro Real, and will become part of My Opera Player's dance catalog.
