A lavish premiere staging of Mozart’s epic Idomeneo will arrive on the shores of St Kilda this July in a co-production by Opera Australia and Victorian Opera.

Opening on 4 July at the Palais Theatre, and running for only three performances, Idomeneo tells a grand tale of love, politics and familial sacrifice set during the Trojan War. It follows the mythical King of Crete as he is faced with an impossible decision: to sacrifice his son in payment of a debt to Poseidon or exile him across the seas.

Led by the distinguished and celebrated opera and festival director, Lindy Hume, this powerful, fully-realised production will see Idomeneo reimagined for Australian audiences. The show will be conducted by Benjamin Bayl with accompaniment from the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra.
